4 Common Health Issues in Women

by Susie Bruhin on Sep 23, 2024
doctor and woman discussing health

At Woven, we work hard to make sure that women are empowered to make the best decisions for their personal health and wellbeing, both by providing useful information and trusted products. One of the ways that we fulfill our commitment to you is by supplying you with useful information regarding potential health issues in women that you should know about. Being educated about these possible health risks can help you to take preventative measures and recognize early signs of problems. Here are some of the common health issues in women to be aware of:

1. Urinary Tract Infections

The first of the health issues in women we are discussing are urinary tract infections, which refers to an infection in any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, bladder, and urethra. Due to the shorter urethra in women as compared to men, women are more likely than men to develop urinary tract infections. Some common signs of UTIs can include frequent urges to pee, cloudy urine, and discomfort when peeing. If you suspect you may have developed a UTI, your doctor can prescribe antibiotics to fight off the infection.

2. Breast Cancer

One of the most serious common health issues in women is breast cancer, which occurs in approximately 1 out of every 8 women during their lifetime. Breast cancer can often be identified through self-exams for new lumps, and professional screenings are recommended for all women over the age of 40, as well as younger women with elevated risk of breast cancer. This disease is genetic, so if one of your family members has been diagnosed with breast cancer, you should get screened earlier in life and more regularly. While breast cancer is fairly treatable, early identification of the disease is key for survival odds.

3. Depression and Anxiety

Another of the common health issues in women is depression, as well as anxiety. Women are statistically more likely to be diagnosed with depression and anxiety compared to men, and this rate increases for pregnant women and women who have just given birth. Postpartum depression can occur as a result of extreme hormonal and physical changes that happen to your body during pregnancy and birth. Whether you are experiencing depression, anxiety, postpartum depression, or other mental health challenges, treatments will typically include a combination of counseling or therapy, as well as medication.

4. Heart Disease

Although heart disease is usually thought of as primarily a men’s health issue, it is actually very common in women as well, affecting over 40% of the female population in the United States. Some of the best ways to minimize the risk of heart disease include eating a good and balanced diet, staying physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, lowering alcohol consumption, and quitting smoking.

Now that you are aware of some of these common health issues in women, you are better equipped to safeguard your personal health and identify early signs of health problems. Remember, at Woven, we are here to help with all of the women’s health issues you may face, so feel free to reach out to our team for recommendations, solutions, and more. We hope to hear from you soon!
